Responding to the Advent of AI

Our report, “Responding to the Advent of AI”, link below, was put together with input from Hg colleagues to support our non-profit partners to adapt to rapid changes in the job and skills landscape due to AI.   We are sharing more widely to offer practical guidance for STEM and tech non-profits. The short paper which we hope to update regularly, covers:

  • Labour Market Shifts: While the UK AI sector is growing rapidly, traditional entry-level tech roles are declining, and the “learning ladder” for junior talent is being disrupted. This creates both challenges and opportunities for new entrants into tech careers.

  • Essential AI Skills: The document outlines foundational AI skills that all programme participants might want to develop, such as understanding AI’s capabilities and limitations, prompt engineering, ethical and responsible AI use, and practical fluency with leading AI tools.

  • Advanced Competencies: For those pursuing specialised AI roles, the report details advanced skills in areas like AI research, production engineering, product development, data engineering, and AI safety and evaluation.

  • Career Pathways: The report categorises growth areas into three types: Familiar roles that now require AI fluency Roles likely to grow due to AI New roles created by AI

  • Learning Resources: The report provides a curated list of foundational and advanced AI courses, frameworks, and tool-specific guides to support curriculum development and participant learning.
