The Hg Foundation are pleased to announce a ~£500k partnership with U-Maths, the University Maths Schools network, to diversify the schools’ student intakes and support pathways into tech careers.
University Maths Schools are state schools for 16-19 year olds that specialise in STEM education, and are founded by and closely linked to leading universities. The Foundation funded a pilot across the 2024/25 academic year, which enabled Maths Schools to develop and trial initiatives designed to make their student body more reflective of the communities they are in - in particular, recruiting more girls and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. This latest grant will enable the programme to be extended for a further two years, benefiting 7500 students in total.
The programme features a range of activities, including: application support for lower income students; outreach activities with local schools; expansion of summer schools for girls; reviewing and improving admissions processes; plus growing the U-Maths Girls Network.
U-Maths are also collaborating with The Hg Foundation-funded Tech500 Programme, run by upReach. This will support more Maths School alumni from underrepresented backgrounds to access tech career pathways.
University Maths Schools have an incredible track record of providing a transformational education to young people with an enthusiasm for mathematics. This is especially true for girls and those from low socio-economic backgrounds. Through our extended partnership with The Hg Foundation, we'll be able to scale up successful pilot programmes and reach substantially more of these students. Together, we're dedicated to building a more equitable world with a diverse pipeline of talented young mathematical scientists. We're excited to work with The Hg Foundation to make this vision a reality.
Access to high-quality STEM education can be a great stepping stone for young people pursuing tech careers. That's why we're pleased to extend our partnership with the University Maths Schools network. This will provide support for more girls and students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds in order to help them reach their full potential in these fields. Together, we’re working to break down barriers that can stand in the way of these talented young people.
