Apps for Good and The Hg Foundation have partnered to deliver App for Social Action an innovative app-development course, mapped to the computing curriculum and delivered across the UK. Teachers and community leaders deliver the course over seven sessions, with the opportunity to interact with industry volunteers.   

The programme aims to reach up to 19,000 state school students aged 11-14 in 600 schools. Part of The Hg Foundation’s grant is supporting an evaluation of the programme, to provide learnings and support further development to create greater impact in the future.  

Apps for Good, an organisation founded in 2010, provides free tech innovation courses to schools and gives teachers ready-made education content, so young people from all backgrounds can develop digital and essential skills to create a brighter future through technology. 

“Before doing this course , I thought I was going to take something like history and art for my GCSEs, more of those types of things. But after this course I started feeling like a real enjoyment for coding. Like, you know how to do it. You know how to teach everyone and thinking I might want to do computer science, and I'm definitely using it."

In a rapidly changing world where AI is reshaping the landscape, young people need more than just digital literacy; they need the agency and skills to use technology to solve the problems they care about. We are incredibly grateful for The Hg Foundation’s funding and partnership support, which have been essential in helping us launch and scale our App for Social Action course, reaching thousands of young people across the UK. Crucially, their support enabled us to focus deeply on our impact through an independent external evaluation. This has given us the objective data and learnings needed to continuously refine our approach, and we are grateful for their role in helping us deliver the best possible future for the next generation.
