Understanding Our Impact

We believe deeply in using and carefully interpreting robust evidence to drive action. We recognise that some of the outcomes we are working together to change are stubborn and deep-rooted, without easy solutions. Evaluation can help us to improve programmes together and lead to greater long-term impact.

Our Impact

We ask all partners to:

  1. Develop a theory of change

  2. Build staff capacity and systems for monitoring and learning to understand how the programme works best, for whom and under what conditions, so they can keep improving.

  3. Measure at least one of our core outcomes, using an approach that is appropriate to their evidence journey, and ideally with a comparison group.

  4. Collect and present data on costs of delivery.

We've developed an accessible guide to share how we think about outcomes and evaluation - and what we ask of the partners we fund.

Our evidence ladder shows how we aim to support partners on this journey. Theory of change, staff capacity for monitoring and evaluation, and robust data and feedback systems are foundational and essential for strong programmes, accountability and performance management. We will support our partners to strengthen these as needed. Building on these foundations, we also want to understand the programme’s impact on outcomes. As partners progress up each rung of the ladder, outcome evaluation becomes increasingly robust. We support partners on this journey, with the aim of building evidence, learning, improving and sustaining impact.
