Supporting A Level students to achieve A* grades in Maths and Further Maths

The mA*ths Online programmes are designed to support A Level Maths and Further Maths students from disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve an A* grade, helping to open up entry into STEM-related degrees at leading universities.

There are two programmes available: the mA*ths Online Programme and the Further mA*ths Online Programme, each focusing on their respective A Level. They both feature separate strands for Year 12 and Year 13 students.

Each strand is made up of three components: MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), online mentoring by current undergraduates and in-person masterclasses. There are also accompanying Teacher CPD courses operated by Imperial which provide pedagogical support for teachers of the subjects.

Background

  • The first national cohort of the mA*ths Online Programmes launched in January 2019 at Imperial.

  • With The Hg Foundation’s support, the programme expanded to include A Level Further Mathematics and extend provision to The University of Manchester.

  • In 2025, with the collaboration of Imperial and MEI, The Hg Foundation became the Central Hub for the programmes – to help oversee the mA*ths network and guide the programmes’ development and expansion.

  • In the 2025/26 academic year, the University of Bath and the University of Warwick joined the network and will launch their first cohorts in January 2026.

Partners

Universities: The mA*ths Online Programmes currently run at four universities. Each university is in a different stage of growth, as they follow a phased approach to implement the programmes and work towards offering both mA*ths and Further mA*ths at full capacity.

To find out further information about the university and to apply to a cohort, please visit the individual university webpages linked below.

Maths Support: MEI (Mathematics on Education and Industry) is an educational charity that works with schools and colleges to provide students with enriching Maths experiences, to inspire and develop mathematical proficiency and promote access to opportunities.

MEI helped to create the original programme content for the mA*ths and Further mA*ths Online Programmes. They have continued to support the programmes at all universities since launch, providing workshops at the masterclasses and hosting the online mentoring sessions on their Integral resources platform.

The programme content (including videos) is based on the original mA*ths Online Programme content and Further mA*ths Online Programme content that was created by Imperial College London in collaboration with MEI.
